Pallet Wrap Film Supplier: OEM Quality Control and Bulk Order Consistency

Large orders can always throw an unexpected issue at you. Large spools of pallet wrap film can encounter many issues that cause breaks and increase packaging costs. These can be variances in film thickness, inadequate pallet containment, and slip during the wrap process.

Because of these potential issues, a pallet wrap film supplier needs to look beyond the finished product.

What is Bulk Order Consistency for a Pallet Wrap Film Supplier?

During production cycles, there are a number of variations of raw materials used, which can affect a wrapping process.

These variations can result in:

•Weak spots on the film which can lead to breakage.

•Inconsistent cling can result in instability by reducing the adhesion between layers.

Bulk order consistency can be controlled by the supplier through:

•Material Consistency: The reliability of raw materials and additives.

•Dimensional Consistency: Film thickness and width and roll length and uniformity of the core.

•Mechanical Consistency: Tensile strength and elongation, puncture and recovery.

A qualified supplier will assess all of these, and not just rely on approved samples.

Which Stretch Film Characteristics do Manufacturers need to Control?

In addition to controlling the nominal film thickness, a manufacturer must control the overall distribution of film thickness, the mechanical properties of the film, and the geometry of the roll.

Understanding Manufacturing Tolerances

Consider a hypothetical OEM specification of 20 μm nominal thickness with a buyer-agreed ±1 μm tolerance. Measured values would need to remain within 19–21 μm under the agreed sampling procedure.

This is an illustrative acceptance specification, not a published Yalan Pack tolerance.

Manufacturing precision should be evaluated through:

•Average thickness and cross-web distribution.

•Minimum and maximum measured values.

•Batch-to-batch variation.

•Measurement repeatability and documented inspection frequency.

A Pallet Wrap Film Supplier should confirm achievable tolerances for the selected film grade before mass production.

How Does a Pallet Wrap Film Supplier Control Manufacturing Quality?

Effects of Raw Materials and Multilayer Extrusion Control

The properties of low-density polyethylene stretch film (LDLPE) are dependent on the raw materials used, the molecular structure, and processing conditions.

Variations in molecular structure can cause differences in additives and processing conditions. Consequently, variation in puncture resistance can be seen in stretch films.

Rheology of the raw material can impact the stretchability of the film.

Factors such as film thickness can impact adhesion and perforation.

During the manufacture of multilayer stretch films, a manufacturer needs to effectively manage formulation, extrusion conditions, distribution of the layers, and their thickness. Lack of managing these can result in adverse impact on film properties.

We have the experience to manufacture multilayer LLDPE stretch films, and we only use 100% virgin LLDPE in our stretch films.

Precision Winding and Final Roll Inspection

For consistent film thickness and final roll dimensions, extrusion and post-extrusion processes need to be very consistent. The most critical process is consistency in winding.

Inconsistencies in winding, e.g. uncontrolled variation in web tension, can lead to an unstable and irregular unwind of the film. This can result in break-down of the wrapping process for machine stretch film.

Finished-roll checks should cover winding quality, core dimensions, roll weight, film width, surface defects, and unwind behavior.

Machine-grade and hand-grade films also require different application validation because their operating tensions and stretching conditions differ.

Bulk Quality Evaluation and Statistical Verification

Samples from multiple production lots and various positions of rolls should be evaluated for bulk quality.

Coefficient of Variation (CV) is an important statistical tool, which is calculated as follows:

CV (%) = Standard Deviation / Mean × 100

An acceptable CV of a product is determined based on the requirement and specification of the test.

For repeat orders, the buyers should require the following:

  • An approved reference sample and signed specifications.
  • Batch identification, traceable records of production, and agreed sampling frequency and acceptance limits.
  • Batch-specific inspection, or a Certificate of Analysis (CoA).
  • Procedures for dealing with non-conforming product, e.g. investigating, isolation, and replacement.
  • General product data sheet.
  • CoA of tested production lot.

How Should Buyers Evaluate a Pallet Wrap Film Supplier for OEM Orders?

During the qualification of a supplier, it should be ensured that the verified process capabilities meet the required specifications.

•Approval of bulk product should be based on ongoing conformance to the agreed specifications.

•Identical labeled thicknesses may not be of the same uniformity and mechanical performance.

•ISO 9001 certifies a quality management system, and should not be taken as a replacement of product inspection.

•High production capability of a process does not ensure repeatability of the process.

Prior to approval of bulk product orders, it is recommended that a wrapping trial be performed using actual equipment, pallets, transport conditions, etc.
